What This Is All About
Hi! I'm Joanna, a slightly dragon obsessed software engineer by profession, and mom of two lovely kids. We're currently going through dyslexia assessment for my oldest and one of the main suggestions was more practice at home. Yay, homework!
While we were given suggestions on what to do it was both overwhelming (here's a million dyslexia related links) and not specific enough - e.g. focus on morphology and understanding language rules... What I found online was a lot of single worksheets (for nearly every imaginable topic), but not much in the way of structured and organised plans.
So I did what any developer would do, I started building my own tools. I'm proud to say that for once I did not jump into code straight away, but instead started with pen and paper. Over the last few months by trial and error (and thanks to some of my background education as an English teacher) I've created a daily routine that works for us.
What You'll Find Here
The core of the site is the daily two page worksheet that combines writing and spelling activities with an optional brain teaser thrown in for fun. I'm sharing the sheets I'm using with a bit of commentary so you can learn from our mistakes and successes.
You might have guessed by now that this is not a silver bullet solution that will magically solve everyone's problems. It's purposely a printout to be used for handwriting practice and not randomly generated by an AI, but instead curated by the parent to help address the specific needs of their child at this specific moment in time.
With the core framework established, I'm working on adding more tools that will work in combination with the custom worksheets.
What I Believe
- Every kid is different: What works for us might not work for you, and that's totally okay
- Small wins matter: celebrate every breakthrough, no matter how small
- Tech can help: unless you're a hermit, technology isn't going away, but we can use it responsibly as a tool not a replacement for human interaction
What's with the Weird Name?
I was originally going to go with something more serious, but most names were taken. So I figured as I'm going to be staring at the site a lot, it should be fun for me too.
Why a dragon library? Well, I'm a big fan of dragons, especially the wise old ones. And if I ever won the lottery my dream would be to build a public library full of dragon sculptures and art. So there you go. Fulfilling that childhood dream in miniature. ;)
Let's Connect
I'd love to hear from you! Whether you're a parent, teacher, or just someone interested in the topics covered on the site. Have questions about the tools? Want to share what's working for your kiddo? Drop me a line!
